Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus and the city with the largest population on the island.
The municipality of Nicosia administers only the centre of the town, which has spread out across several kilometres, and now encompasses many surrounding villages and settlements. Its population is around 250,000 (a third of the total population of Cyprus) but the city has the feel, and character, of a much larger town. It is the administrative and financial hub of the island as well as home to several universities, colleges and other educational establishments. It also hosts most foreign embassies and offshore companies (a big industry in Cyprus nowadays). Its many international students and foreign workers, have given the city a truly cosmopolitan feel.
